What brand of oil do you all recommend for my 1998 Mazda Protege LX? I've been using Penzoil but have heard bad things about it.

Welcome to the site.

ONe thing you'll learn real quick is that people will jump on you if you ask a question without first looking around to see if it's been answered. 99% of the info you'll need is probably already covered on the site.

Some oil threads I found. I'd encourage you searching some more:

Whats ur odometer at?
use high milage engine if ur engine is indeed high mileage, itz suppose to help.

I only play 20 bucks cnd for oil change w/ filter. So I use whatever my mechanic has.
Be4 it was Castrol GTX, motormaster last time, but MAN... the engine sucks, burns so easily.

Red Line fully synthetic 10W-30 engine oil. Mazda oil filter, either OEM or 626 V6 filter.

Amsoil is part of Amway, Quixtar, Confederated Products. They are a MLM or Multi-Level-Marketing operation. If anyone has any questions I can post some links that explain more. Long story short though, the business preys on the poor and destitute/desperate with the promise of easy money. More money is made through training(sessions/materials) and promotional items - than on the actual sales of the products themselves. The biggest push of all is to get people under you so that you make a portion of their profits, and eventually the people under them.

I killed some time when I was younger during the Quixtar launch period - ate free food and did alot of 'social engineering' (had 3 of them paying for my meals, and filling my gas tank) before I dropped the proverbial bomb and created some havok at a meeting of roughly 200 people. In the end I ended up being escorted out and on the drive home amidst my chuckling I realized that while those people seriously needed to get a life - so did I for wasting so much time fucking with them.

Agreed.
So Amsoil decided many years ago to go with a then-new radical marketing practice. They had no way of knowing it was going to become the wholesale joke of the century.
Besides being the armpit of the marketing world is it really that bad? You get bent over by a small distributor instead of a large one...just don't try and sell the stuff and it'll never be an issue.

I used to run Mobil One nearly exclusively for a couple years.
Is it better then conventional oil? Hell yes, but a couple things have prevented me from trusting it implicitly.
First, its not 100% synthetic. I never understood completely(something to do with the base stock)....but its different from Redline, Royal Purple and Amsoil in that regard. But they call it synthetic...so which is it?
Second, there's been recalls on whole lots. I had never heard of such a thing before. That makes me a little nervous. On the one hand, at least they're doing something about it....but on the other hand, was it bad enough to need to do something?

Your best bet is to try an off the shelf synthetic. Keep an eye on your oil level and see how it does. Drain it out at 3k and send it off for analysis. This costs around $15-20...it will tell you how exactly it performed for YOUR vehicle and YOUR driving style. Then you can choose whether to use it or try something else.

As a hopefully soon to be engineer, I can assure you that it really doesn't matter...The gimmick with synthetics is perpetuated by ignorance for the most part...the only thing it truely outperforms other oils in is stability, and longevity...on an economy engine...it only lasts longer...you may see slightly better gas mileage depending on the condition of your engine, and if you switch weights or viscosity around...but thats it...

I have torn apart about a couple engines before for testing...and found that an FS that had been using Castrol GTX for its 50,000 life had the least wear on piston rings and crank journals of any engine I had seen...the FS also has long stroke, something that makes oiling an issue...My point here is not that Castrol standard oil is the best, or better than synthetics...its that the owner obviously gave a shit...He most likely changed the oil every 3k-5k miles normally...and watched the level constantly...I have seen KL-V6's running royal purple since brand new, with extreme ring wear...most likely because the owner felt he had the best oil on earth, and for some reason never needed to change the best oil on earth...

so the main thing to remember is that you will usually get a few thousand miles more out of a synthetic oil than a standard...thats the main thing...both will protect an engine very well if changed frequently and correctly...and the engine is kept in over all good condition...Personally, I have used Mobil 1 for every car I have ever had...change it every 5500 miles as close as possible, with a new v6 mobil 1 filter...its about 28 bucks each time...and I trust it...it looks the same every time I change it...and seems to work great...I could pay triple that for Motul, or Royal purple, or even Amsoil...and it would definately be pointless...The ingredients of the higher priced synthetics are so similar that it comes down to simply be subjective...you can read the tech articles from all the sites, and they will drill away at how better their oil is, and why its "truely" synthetic and others aren't...but in the end it will make such a small difference on engine wear (as long as you are smart about changing your oil) that its irrelevant...these are not F1 engines...they are economy engines...

Which is exactly the reason I use it.

Fair enough...but you seem to be rare...a lot of people use it because they feel it lubricates and protects better...not true...it lubricates and protects affectively longer...thats all...regular oil simply needs changed sooner...

and the stability against thermal breakdown is not a bid deal for a small four cylinder, especially a naturally aspirated one in stock form...You would really have to try hard to destroy regular oil in an engine as powerfull as this...especially if you still change it every 3,000 miles...
