View Full Version : Talk Sense into me, Getting an Evo

OK, so you all have seen me come and go about getting something other than the MSP....The dealer called me on tuesday and said they just traded for a white Evo with 1800 miles. It has sunroof and theft recovery. When all is said and done I have gotten them to give me 15,000 for my car as is (with mods) and get the evo for 26k out of the door.
So here is the question do I do it? I means my car payment goes up about 120 a month (after putting 5 grand down) and my insurance will go up about 200 a year. It does not seem like much but 1600 bucks a year is a nice chunck of money. I basically have about until tomorrow morning to make up my mind.
Owning an Evo is one thing, but I don't like driving a stock car. So I either keep the MSP and keep getting all the goodies or a buy the Evo and will probably not have the money to get any goodies for at least a year.
Thoughts?

After reading a long-term test of the Evo my views have changed on the car somewhat. Its second to none when it comes to performance but it has its downfalls seem to be a nuisance. Practicality ownership and maintenance of the car is just bad, the rough ride of the car gets really unconformable and taking on long trips is just a terrible idea, replacing a pair of wrapped front rotors costs $829, and it does have its share of mechanical problems. If your really big on track events and have a second daily driver this car seems perfect but as a daily driver it seems to get tiresome to ride in constantly and the maintenance and care of the car seems to get really steep money wise. Im not saying its a bad car but it just doesnt seem to the best idea to have the car as your only one. Just something to think about

hmmmm I had not heard about costs of repairs on the car....I do have a DD (Accord) so this is just a second car that I use for car shows and to have fun with. Thanks for the info

Yeah FBI is referring to an article in one of the major car mags that's out on newstands right now. They said repairs were expensive, they mentioned some trouble getting warranty work done, and they mentioned it's not a good daily driver. I'd take the "not a good daily driver" remark though with a grain of salt because they're all old magazine editors with different tastes than what you're more than likely looking for.
You've laid out a tough choice....my personal opinion is that your MSP is modded nicely and I would be reluctant to buy a used Evo. New is one thing...used is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

The ownership costs with an evo are pretty rediculous for all the above points. Getting warrenty work is ALLMOST as bad as with mazda. The transfer cases go at 3k, the clutch at 5k if youre lucky. Dont get me wrong, it a great car, but I wouldnt want to own one. cough *NSX TIME!!!* cough.

Hey Demonic! Keep Your Mazda! Fuck Lancers. Your car is sweet. If your car has been good to you, then why fix what ain't broken. There's better cars out there that you could trade your ride in for. I mean, it's ultimately up to you on your decision. I personally don't like any mitsubishi's, they don't have attractive body styles. Mazda has them beat by a landslide. Whatever your choice, I do wish you happiness though! So, good luck and peace. Later.

.
True but I think the MSP is just right, great performance and not too harsh of a ride daily (Shitty NJ roads dont Help) and Im rather positive that the Evo has a much stiffer suspension set-up then the MSP. Coupled with really noticable turbo lag, a notchy shifter ( I know we dont have the greatest either) and having to get revs somehwat high to have a clean smooth take off ( due to AWD I believe) than other cars it really does make it almost a hassle to drive this car anywhere but a track. I understand what your saying and maybe others dont mind this trade off in a car to get the performance that you do but I wouldnt want to have this as my Daily Driver.

Keep the MSP and start modding!
Get my Diamond Plate Floor Mats and use the Honda as your daily driver. (sssh)

Keep the MSP, take the money you save and put it somewhere else that's more important and pressing or just save it for a rainy day.

YUP,i say keep the MSP and smoke the shit out of an EVO. its too expensive to own those cars. most of the EVO's and STI's you see on the streets are stock cuz their too expensive to mod. unless your parents got money then fuck it. but in my case i live with my girl and pay bills. the MSP fits our budget just fine. (alright)

Keep the MSP IMO. To make yourself feel more comfortable about this decision, read the one year review of the EVO in the newest Car and Driver mag. No doubt the car is a performer, but there are many long term issues you should read up on. Whatever you decide to go with, you will have a great car.

OK< I called the sales guy back and told him I will have to pass on the Evo at this time. Probably better in the long run....:)

I know for sure that the expenses of having an evo are rediculous. I had two friends here that had them as soon as they made it to the US and both of them were so broke after the first year when they had to replace the extremely worn breaks that ate the rotors almost inhalf in about two days, one of them had his door panel fall off at around 8000 miles, and his instrument lights burnt out at 10000 miles. then both had new clutches in them before 5000 miles, and one had to replace his whole Tranny at 14000 and it wasnt covered under warrenty due to "hard driving" so they both sold them and got nice cars now insted of mitsubushis. Lexus IS300 and Honda S2000 (with turbo) By the way they both have driven my car and said it felt nicer than their evo and it has 30000 miles on it. Lancers build quality isnt that great to me and the interior lights dont even match, the radio is that cheep green color and the dash is orange. Fast car doesnt equal nice car.

I think you made the right choice. The EVO is a great performer, no doubt, but I don't know about your income situation...what I mean is, for me, 120 a month more is a big step up, plus another 5g's down? That's crazy man. If I was to trade my MSP for anything used, it would have to be an IS300 all the way.

yea good choice bro
err not to steal his thunder or anything but i've had similar thoughts and was thinkin do u think it is a good idea for a trade in of my msp for an rx8?
Demonic-Speed
03-27-2005, 07:39 PM
I have a friend who just got an RX8 and is really surprised at how slow the car is. It is a nice one, but it does not give you the seat of the pants feel that the MSP does.

i say always stick with your gut...and the msp was most likely your gut cuz thats the car you bought - dunno if that made sense or not, i have trouble transfering thoughts into words in an orderly fashion

Good choice bro...
After my msp, I will probably purchase a STI and keep it stock, or a G35. The only thing about the msp (with my mods etc...), having a sti stock would probably make me feel a little better about not blowing the engine. I can keep up with stock evo's and sti's, but blowing the motor is always on the back of my mind. As of right now, speed and handling are perfect for me.

Best advice ever. Forget about opinions of others, do what YOU want and what makes YOU happy.
On a new note, I found out today that my insurance would actually be quite a bit *cheaper* for an Evo8 MR than what I'm paying on the MSP. This was also the cause with a MSM. Makes ya wonder WTF insurance companies are thinking.

Good call passing on the EVO. I wouldn't want to be caught holding a car that's so close to the edge reliability-wise if Mitsubishi goes under. Hopefully some of the interesting cars they were showing at the auto show will help them, but they're too risky right now to be betting on a car that needs new clutches at 5,000 miles and needs $850 rotors. Ouch!

that is true but in the end, my point still should override any others... despite what everyone else may think, you need to do what you want.
One other thing to remember - and it's brought to me every time I drive something other than myb MSP, thinking I may be interested in something other than my MSP:
I make decent decisions.
I thought out the MSP purchase well beforehand, test drove most of what was available (WRX, MiniS, GTI/GLI, restored A2 VW's, even the Vibe GT and Matrix) and made my decision. Still, sometimes I drive other things - the 9-2x, the R32, the STi - and enjoy them. My MSP (thank God) is paid off - a major plus - and trading it in loses money. Further, it out-drives all of the above in terms of enjoyment for me, which is the most important factor for me. OK, OK, I liked the R32 better, but not "MSP + $15k" better.

I test drove the EVO RS last Friday. It was a hell of a ride. Even got a chance to hit a straight road and launched it. BUT the ride was very harsh(thought abt my wife not liking it) And the RS is the stripped out model which was meant for the racer who wnts to upgrade and doesnt need a huge spoiler and other things. But the sticker was 27,900 for it?? That is just outta my budget right now since bills like the mortgage and two reasonable car payments for example are more important than trying to afford a car that may cause me to spend more money on top of a hefty car payment. But overall the EVO is awesome IMO.

I'd have to back Ping up on this. The R32 was fucking awesome to drive. The exhaust note is simply unbelievable. I was cruising in 3rd gear when test-driving. I kept looking around to see where the sound was coming from. Then I dropped to 2nd and realized....Hey Dumbass!! it was me. that car handles almost has good as the MSP too. But, too heavy, too expensive, then again 6-speed (drools)
