Can someone provide me a link for a list of TSB's on the Protege '02, I saw they finally fixed the stupid cold start rattle, with a part, and since the car is still under warranty, I want to get it fixed.

Is there a list on the net since obviously its not on Mazda's site.

All the sites I looked at you have to pay for the details. Could print that page out and take it to the dealer.

Damn, I hate dealerships, they always treat you like your stupid, and if you get something off the internet, they are beyond confused :(

They do that because their "service advisors" are incompetent. Dealers are not the only ones that have access to these, independent shops can pull them up also, but they can't flash your ECU, unfortunately :(

I believe a $25 subscription to Alldata will give you access to that stuff, no?

Looks like it.. Just didn't want to pay it for ONE TSB, the car has been great other than Gas Mileage and the Cold Start Rattle. My Mitsubishi is up at the end of next year, and Im taking over the Protege, so I want things fixed on it.

Cool, yeah the warranty was up on mine when I got it, so the cold engine rattle has been pissing me off for a while. They want $200 to fix it. They knew what that TSB was right away, so I bet if you were paying cash they'd know what it is :)

I've learned to live with it though. I just let the car warm up for a couple of minutes and then I don't really hear it anymore. I'm planning to fix it eventually though.

As far as gas mileage...is it a manual? When I got mine I was getting pretty low MPG like 25 or so because I didn't know how to drive it :). Now I'm up in the upper 20ies and hit a 31 on a rare occasion.

Yeah once the car is warmed up it runs fine, not a problem at all, But that initial start sound is like HORRIBLE.. It sound like the Rod is going to get thrown.. UGH.. Yeah If I was paying for it theyd know what it was right away money hungry bastards..

NVMY03GT,

Alright, I mailed that print out this morning. This document is basically what used to be accessible via the link in the "Stop Your Cold Engine Rattle (plus a rant)" thread. I've shown it to the dealer and they said they stock the part and would do the work the same day, so your dealer should honor it also.

So let me know how this works out; if the fix is effective, that is. Because then I'll have to be getting it done on my car.

So wait, you don't have a P5? I was under the impression that you did, since you considered that other thread relevant...oh well.

The other Thread I thought was for a P5?? Isn't the Cold Start Rattle on ALL of the Protege's?

Yes, you're right, it affects all proteges (certain years, anyway). The thread starter was a P5 owner, so somehow I though you had one too...I guess I made that connection subconsciously--sorry.

The TSB I sent you is for the Protege5, since it's the only one I had, so I don't know if it can be applied to your case...but it's something.

Hey its a starting block, even if it can't be applied this should point them in the right direction, does the P5 Have the same engine as the 3rd Gen Protege?

I've got some news though...

Go here:

http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/tsb/

and click on "3rd gen." It works now somehow!

That is the most complete list available!

Edit: the link in the original post was messed up. Enjoy this stuff...

If you have a 2.0L in your car then yes, it should be the same.

noobish questions...

What is a TSB exactly? Why does it help me in any way? What should I do when I find out that my car has a problem described in a TSB?

My ignorance is great in these matters since I never bought a car younger than 10yo before that Mazda.

A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin. Basically if your car is under warranty, the dealership will perform the work described in the bulletin for free (or it should). If your car is not under warranty, they can still fix it but you have to pay.

If there's a TSB out for a certain issue, it means that the issue is farily common. A TSB basically describes the repair procedure. Hope this helps...
