Silly questions are generally followed by silly answers. Theoretically, a Protege could probably top out somewhere around 3,000 - 4,000 hp, assuming a similar setup to top fuel dragsters.

A streetable Protege, though? Maybe 1,000 or so for a daily driver.

A reasonable limit? Maybe 400 or so. And by then you've changed so many things on the car that it really isn't just a Protege anymore.

The answer you seek depends on the size of your wallet.

xtrememps
03-03-2005, 05:37 PM
wow lots of help....

That's way too broad of a question. We don't know what size engine you have, what your plans are...nothing. There's no magic maximum HP number for any engine. There may be a range where parts start breaking, such as in the FS-DE (2.0 liter) engines in proteges were the rods will generally start bending at around 250 HP.

I think it's best to think about what you want to accomplish, and what you want to spend (or can spend for that matter). Do you want just a little extra kick in the butt? Or do you want to go all out and try and get sub 12's in the 1/4 mile?

On proteges the way to get the most horsepower is through forced induction, you won't see huge gains staying naturally aspirated. So, welcome...and please have fun with the search button. (smoke)

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 05:37 PM
How much are you willing to spend after you buy the car?

<$1000 = probably around 130-150whp
$1000-$3500 = probably aroun 150-250 whp
$3,500-$5000 = probably around 250-400 whp
>$5000 = you should have bought a different car

It all depends on what type of set up you want. Turbo? NA? Stock internals and transmission? Tuned for reliability or for peak performance?

There are simply an infinate number of variables for anyone to answer your question correctly.

here's a nice parts list for you:

NOS brand nitrous, 2 bottles(the big ones)
reinforced welds on your intake and floorboards
vtec controller
chrome wheels, no smaller than 18"

well its going to be stock....so if im not wrong a stock protege is arounr 163 HP....yeah I will be willing to spend about 2 to 3 for upgrade to the HP

Gbourdon

Then you should turbo it.

If you are going to spend about $2-3K total, I'd say your best bet is to buy a used MSP turbo set up from either a forum member or a wrecked MSP.

With just that you'll be around 150 WHP. Then get a muffler shop to give you a 2.5" catless midpipe and cat back section for another $100 or so.

You'll have a nice, realtivly quick ride without blowing the bank.

Most other turbo kits are around $3000 new which is the limit of your budget.
----

If you could swing getting a used MSP rather than a used 2002 base protege, that $2-3K would go a lot further since you'd be starting with a turbo kit allready in.

So far I've spent about $1300 on performance products and have a FMIC, SRI, 2.5" Exhaust downpipe and catless midpipe. All I have left to get on the performance side is a good boost controller, front motor mount and new exhaust hangers, all of which should cost me about $200 more. when I'm all done I'll up the boost and cruise around with about 220 WHP.

It depends. If you can get a used turbo kit you could probably see 150 -175 at the wheels I would say.

thecoofunka
03-03-2005, 05:50 PM
what does it mean a used MSP turbo set?

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 05:52 PM
Some people have switched to bigger turbos, so you could get their old turbo, intake, intercooler and downpipe for much cheaper than a new kit would cost you.

03-03-2005, 05:54 PM
so just like used turbo kits?....where can I find those at? any good sites?

Here in the for sale section is your best bet for finding a protege specific turbo kit. There are a few members selling theirs right now.

even if you find a nice turbo, with $2-3k you're not gonna see lots of hp. reason is that your stock internals will decide they dont like life any more at 225-250whp. Then there's the fact of your clutch smelling all day long depending on your driving habits. If you had bought an msp, $2-3k would do you a lot better

Hadn't thought about the clutch, you'll probably need to upgrade that too. Your stock one will probably last a while if it hasn't been beaten on before, but you should set asde about $300 to upgrade the clutch when your stocker goes out.

Internals I wouldn't worry about. With only $3K to spend, you probably won't reach 225WHP.

WOW you are a noob.

The Mazda Speed or MSP is a limited edition protege with upgrades: Turbo, intercooler, exhaust, suspension, stereo, interior etc... Basically a protege with about $3-5K in mods allready on it.

First editions were orange (see my sig pic) and black. 2nd editions were blue, titanium, silver, and yellow.

I want to say there were about 2700 total porduced but am not sure.

if you want a go-fast car that is easily modded, this is not the car. If you want the best handling fwd(note:the regular sedan needs suspension upgrades to handle like the MSP at least but you can make it better for just a little more) car that can be modded but for a pretty penny then this is your car.

lol yeah....im just trying to learn more about proteges....and seeing if this car is really for me....I like the body style and everything about it....

If you want a fast car as your top priority, the protege isn't for you. You should look into an SRT4, there are tons more out there, used ones are fairly inexpensive and their engine potential is much better than the protege's.

The protege is a driver's car, with good suspension, that's fun to drive, but not a big winner at the drag race track. If you like going fast through corners and on winding roads more than racing on the track or highway, then the protege could be a good fit. The interior and comfort level is better in my opinion too.

Problem is the aftermarket support is low compared to other performance oriented compact cars. So while parts are available, they are usually more expensive and harder to find.

dont get me wrong I dont own a protege yet....I just thought this car was really for me.....I have about 7-10 grand to spend on a car...and I LOVE the body style of the protege and the interior.....and like I said I want my car to have a bout 250-300 HP and the rest is just cool modds for apperance

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 06:21 PM
For that kind of horsepower (250-300) you would need a used msp turbo kit $2000, upgraded engine internals (forged rods and pistons) $1200, some sort of engine management ($600-1200), 3" exhaust work ($150-1000), upgraded intercooler ($300-900), upgraded intake ($75-200) at least. You'd probably want to upgrade your suspension too ($400-1000).

I think you are over estimating the amount of horsepower you need. 220 at the wheels is plenty fast for a reliable daily driver that only weighs 2800lbs. YOu won't be smoking everything you come across, but you'll have a smile on your face as you drive it everyday.

thecoofunka
03-03-2005, 06:23 PM
yeah...I know that Id just prefer about 250-300 HP

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 06:24 PM
If that is all you have to spend, and having 250-300 is important to you, I'd look for a different car. Get an older civic hatchback or an older eclipse. Both of which have much stronger engines with more aftermarket product availablity.

I think you would have to spend about twice your budget ($14k-20K) to buy a protege and all the performance products necessary to reach over 250 whp.

thecoofunka
03-03-2005, 06:27 PM
blehh...well I guess I have to go think more...becuase i guess im a picky person...becuase I really need a protege style of car....but I guess that not really going to happen with 7-10 grand....becuase yeah iK now if I want a fast car I can just get a Supra

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 06:32 PM
You can have a fast protege for that price, but not one fast enough to outrun an EVO or STI. At 300WHP your car would be faster than either, but you'll end up feeling like you should have just bought a faster car to start with.

TX Speed Demon
03-03-2005, 06:36 PM
Good luck with the Supra man, a 1995 turbo supra will still cost you over $20K.

Kelly Blue Book Turbo supra pricing (http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.ur?kbb.TX;106455;TX113&75206;+r&40;Toyota;1995%20Supr a&11;TO;B9&&&)

If you only have less than $10K to spend including the price of the car, and you want around 300 WHP a civic is really your best option.

if you like the protege buy a used es 2.0 motor...... add a mam or highboos turbo for 3000 or so.... it is safe for 9 psi...... i run mine at 12 but 9 is the recommended..... grab a msp lsd...... and hit the strip since the protege only ways 2650............. slicks help........

If you wanna go all out. Cut the truck out, get a custom fit Ford 9" some slicks, powerglide and a 454 chev with a Weiand 8-71. Yeah you will have to cut some stuff, bt you will also probably be the fastest Protege on here. Saw a guy on E-bay that did it to a Cavalier.

put a lot of stickers everywhere.

Each sticker gives you 10 hp at the wheels.

not 135... 130.

to get 300hp at the crank, that's doable, but like everybody said, it's not cheap... the Protege wasn't necessarily designed to be modded.
Maybe you should look into a 1.6L and buy the Hiboost turbo kit... it seems to make a fair amount of power.

Reminds me of some random dude that messaged me a couple weeks ago asking me how he could make his MSP faster. He ONLY wanted it to be able to beat a modded EVO that ran low 12's. I couldn't tell if he was fucking with me or not.

man. that's an easy modlist...
2step process.
1. Sell Protege
2. jump off cliff.

The speed that you'll accrue from jumping off a decent cliff will WHOOP a modded EVO :)

This thread seems to be pretty pointless. I absolutely love the question "how much horsepower can a Protege have?"

I heard a radio prank call on the Internet once where this radio station called a woman and totally gave her BS about her car in the shop. They said she needed Halogen fluid, a new transmission, preferably two, and if she could do without reverse, it would save her money..............that question kinda reminds me of her smarts.......
