I am looking to put an instrument cluster in from an 03 LX with a tach. Does anyone know if the tach would work if I install it on a 03 DX? I read on a Protege FAQ page that I can just swap the clusters out and it will work. Is this true?

The cluster works as a direct swap, however the tach will not work until you wire it up. The stock harness has an empty spot for the tach wire on the DX. My 2000 DX was wrecked before I had the opportunity to do the wiring, but the cluster worked properly. If you look at the harness, you can easily tell where it is.
I saw somebody post a few minutes ago that they have a P5 cluster for sale. It should fit fine, considering it isn't an auto if you have a manual.

I did this to my 2000DX...it wil work however like previously said you will need to find tach signal and wire it into the cluster..hardest part is finding a pin for the plug...it is the secong plug harness second from the top left row when it is plugged in.

I have an 03 DX and I put a 99 cluster in it. Everything works except I had to uses some resistors to equal out the temp gauge values and remove the CEL. As far as the tach it worked fine once it was pluged in.

So are you guys saying it was a direct swap in and no additional wiring was needed? Maybe at some point after 2000 they started using the same wiring harnesses throughout the Protege lineup.

one word of caution though, the cluster i tried was from a 99 lx and it didn't have the keyhole light, so that didn't function and also when the driving lights were on, the high beam light activated.
i would make sure the year is close as possible, along with mileage.

I got my mileage reflashed. My highbeam light stays on. I also have the delayed dim dome light. Didnt know so many things were controlled by the cluster.
